In the first instalment, we saw Samuel Baker bidding for Sass Flóra at the slave market in Viddin. It is not known whether he was outbid by the Pasha of Viddin, but the fact remains that he escaped with her in hired carriages and sped to Bucharest for safety, along with his friend Maharadjah Singh and his three servants. |Songs to Celebrate Spring|
There are some 200,000 Hungarian folksongs on record. Many of them were saved from fading into oblivion by the zeal of Kodály Zoltán and Bartók Béla. In the beginning of the 19th century, they scoured the more remote areas of Hungary for authentic folksongs and recorded many of them on wax cylinders as they were sung by native singers. Many other collectors followed in their footsteps.

Csongrád Memorial Plaque to Honor Women Abused in WWII

We all know that war is hell, and World War II was no exception. Not only were many men killed on the front, but the women and girls left behind were physically and psychologically ruined by the Soviet troops that overran the country. The women and girls of Csongrád – some 260 of whom reported such abuse – were not the only ones who underwent this fate, but that city is the first in all of Europe to have such a memorial. |The Story of 5 Villages|
Established in the Bukovina, north of Moldavia by Székely villagers fleeing from Austrian persecution in the 18th century, the inhabitants of five villages were resettled in Bácska (southern Hungary) in 1941, in places abandoned by the Serbs when that area was returned to Hungary. Once the Yugoslav troops advanced in 1944, they fled from there and were resettled after the war once again, this time in Tolna and Baranya Counties. See the full story...
