In this poem, Petőfi laments that the great outpouring of patriotic sentiment which he set off with his declamation of “Talpra magyar!” on March 15th, 1848 was not followed up by action. He considers that the chain binding the country has not been broken, merely loosened, and is calling on the people to hurry to complete the task.
